ABSTRACT

The impact of historical Benin architecture on the present layout of Benin City is significant. Traditional Benin architecture, characterized by structures like the city walls, moats, and palace complexes, has influenced the urban planning and layout of modern Benin City. The city walls and moats, in particular, served as a defensive and symbolic boundary, and remnants of these structures continue to shape the city's spatial organization. Additionally, the Oba's palace and other historic buildings have played a great role in defining architectural styles in the city. While modernization has altered some aspects, the historical architecture of Benin still leaves a mark on the city's layout, reflecting its rich cultural heritage and historical significance.
