ABSTRACT
Heavy metals which constitute an ill-defined group of inorganic chemical hazards, may pose risks and hazards to humans and the ecosystem through: direct ingestion or contact with contaminated soil, the food chain (soil-plant-human or soil-plant-animal human) hence this study was carried out to assess the distribution of some heavy metals in some soils of Iguzama community of Edo state. Soil survey by a rigid grid method was conducted that produced three (3) mapping units. Each mapping unit was represented by a pedon that was appropriately described and sampled for a laboratory analysis The soil evaluated had Three (3) pedons covering about 40 hectares. The heavy metals (Cu, Fe, Zn, Ni, Mn, Pb, Cr) concentration in all three pedons of the study area did not exceed the critical values recommended by Alloway (1995) for soils. Cd concentration exceeded the standard normal range values in soils recommended by Alloway in all the pedons, which makes the land prone to the risks of this element in soils. Therefore, since the Cadmium (15.72, 8.5, 7.13 mgkg-1 ) content across all pedons is above the critical range (3- 8 mgkg-1 ). In the study area, no cultivation should be done. Also phyto-remediation should be encouraged as plant has shown to be able to accumulate most of the cadmium from the soils and help create a toxic free environment which can therefore lead to the commencement of cultivation in the study area
