ABSTRACT

Assessment of the various potting media and seed source for the nursery production of Soursop (Annona muricata) seedlings was carried out in the screen house of the Department of Crop Science, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin, Benin City. The experiment was laid out in a 5x3 factorial arrangement fitted into a completely randomized design (CRD), replicated three times. Five media types (Top soil, Top soil and Cow dung, Top soil and Poultry manure, Top soil and Wood shaving, Top soil and Oil palm refuse bunch (OPRB)), three locations from where the seeds were sourced (Isihor, Emu and Ikabigbo) were used. Data was collected on collar girth, dry weight, fresh weight, number of leaves, plant height, root/shoot ratio and root length. Data collected were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results showed that the various potting media and seeds from different locations had no significant differences p < 0.05 on collar girth, number of leaves and root/shoot ratio, However, significant differences p < 0.05 was obtained from other variables namely dry weight, fresh weight, plant height and root length. The result showeds that potting media and location had no effect on the growth of the Soursop ( Annona muricata) seedlings in the nursery.
