ABSTRACT
This study aimed at assessing the socio-economic status and adult learners’ participation in functional literacy programmes in Benin metropolise. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. The design adopted for this study is the survey research design. The sample consisted of 100 respondents which are basically literacy programmes student in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Questionnaires were used for the collection of data from 100 (one hundred) respondents which were basically students. The research instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor. The test re-test method was adopted in testing the reliability of the instrument after which the research instruments were administered by the researcher herself. The data obtained were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. Findings revealed that household income level impact adult learners' participation in functional literacy programmes. It was also revealed that income levels, employment status and educational attainment impact access to and engagement in functional literacy programmes for adult learners. Based on the findings, it was recommended that adult learner should be motivated more so that illiteracy and ignorance will be out and thereby enhancing meaningful development. It was also recommended that government should provide more adequate literacy centres that will faster functional literacy programmes.
