ABSTRACT
This essay analyzes and explores the various artistic elements used in Nigerian protest lyrics by examining literary devices and diction. It also aims to demonstrate how these literary items contribute to the persuasive power of the protest songs and their ability to convey social and political messages effectively and provide a deeper appreciation of the artistry behind Nigerian protest lyrics and their instrumentality in shaping a public discourse and inspiring social change in the country The study is limited to the analysis of a corpus of Nigerian protest song lyrics including the lyrics of: Falz's "This is Nigeria", Falz's "Talk", Falz's "Mr Yakubu" ft Vector, Falz's "Owa" ft. Tekno, Eedris Abdulkareem's "Jaga Jaga (reloaded)" ft. Mr Raw and Madarocka, Fela Kuti's "Zombie", Fela Kuti's "Sorrow, Tears and Blood" and Sound Sultan's "Naija Jungle". In this study these lyrics will be analyzed for the use of literary devices and diction. The study will also consider the ways in which they are used to convey the message of the lyrics and to sensitize listeners. The qualitative method to is used examine the Art of Nigerian protest lyrics. The analysis is based on the close reading of the lyrics and the findings is supported by evidence from the lyrics. The lyrics are analyzed for the use of irony, allusion, metaphor, satire, rhetorical questions, repetition and diction considering the way they are used to convey the message of the lyrics and the effectiveness of these devices in conveying the message.Nigerian protest lyrics are an important form of social commentary and activism, the lyrics are often powerful and moving, and they can inspire listeners to take action. This study analyzed the use of literary devices and diction in Nigerian protest lyrics and found that Nigerian protest lyrics use strong and evocative diction which is used to create a sense of urgency and to highlight the seriousness of the issues being addressed and are rich in literary devices, such as metaphor, irony, allusion, etc. These 7 7 devices are used to create vivid images, evoke strong emotions, and emphasize the message of the song. The study found that the use of literary devices and diction in Nigerian protest lyrics is effective in conveying their message to the listener.
