ART AS A TOOL FOR SOCIAL CHANGE AND EMPOWERMENT OF THE MARGINALIZED AND VULNERABLE GROUPS

ABSTRACT

This study explores the potential of art as a tool for social change and empowerment of marginalized and vulnerable groups in the South-South region of Nigeria. The study uses qualitative and historical research methodology and data from secondary sources. The study investigates how art can be leveraged to address social injustices, promote inclusivity, and foster community development in the South-South region. The findings suggest that art has the potential to provide a platform for marginalized voices to be heard, challenge societal norms and stereotypes, promote cultural preservation and exchange, foster community engagement and participation, support education and skills development and encourage social activism and advocacy. The research also highlights the importance of art in driving social change and empowerment in the South-South region of Nigeria, and demonstrates the need for increased support and investment in arts programming and initiatives in the region. The research further recommends that governments should create platforms for marginalized groups to share their stories and experiences through art. Besides, government should ensure the training of creative arts education trainers and teachers and promote active, participative teaching methods. Additionally, it encourages collaboration and partnership between artists, activists, and community leaders to amplify the impact of art-based interventions.
