ABSTRACT

This study examined architecture in school and architecture in practice: the contrast (a case study of University of Lagos). It focuses on finding if there is a correlation between architecture taught in schools and that obtained in actual practice. It also extensively the discuss the factors affecting teaching and learning of architecture in schools and that of  those affecting practical architecture in a bid to striking a balance between them. The data used for this research is attribute data. A total of 40 Questionnaires were administered across Lagos metropolises. However, only 40 valid responses were coded and analyzed. From the analysis of the questionnaire, result showed that quite a great disparity between architecture taught in school and architecture in actual practice. Factors such as inadequate teaching and learning facilities; inadequate practical classes and inadequate qualified and competent tutors is seen to be responsible for the poor outcome of architectural students in tertiary institutions. It was however recommended that more attention should be given to the teaching of architecture in tertiary institution so that students would be able to face the real life experience. School management should endeavour to revisit the schools’ curriculum so as to ensure that teaching architecture is more of practical based rather than theoretical oriented.
