ABSTRACT
Air quality is a vital determinant of the quality of life of individuals in both urban and rural areas. This study was carried out to determine and map air quality indices based on PM10 concentrations of selected points within the University of Benin, Ugbowo Campus, Nigeria. Relative humidity and PM10 values for the study area were determined using a Smart Sensor Model AS8700A. The 24-hourly average was used in the determination of AQI values. ArcGIS 10.8 software was used in the development of spatial maps using the AQI values calculated. All calculations of mean in the study were done using Microsoft Excel 2016 software. The mean values were subjected to one way ANOVA testusing SPSS version 21. The test was conducted at 95% probability level.Relative humidity values ranged from 14% to 88% indicating high levels of humidity. For PM10, the concentrations ranged from 40 µg/m3 to 121 µg/m3.The One-way ANOVA test revealed that there was a significant difference in the PM10 levels and relative humidity at p >0.05. AQI values ranged from 40 to 110.89. Some values fell within the ‘Good’ range, others fell in the range of ‘Moderate’ and values from four points were in the ‘Unhealthy for sensitive groups’ range. This indicated a potential health hazard for exposed individuals. Air pollution control measures are recommended.
