APPRAISAL OF THE IMPACT OF EMPLOYEE’S HEALTH AND SAFETY ON PRODUCTIVITY

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to establish ways in which employee’s health and safety management systems and teamwork can be used to enhance employee commitment to university of Benin. The objectives of the study was to examine the commitment of the management of University of Benin towards employee health and safety, to examine how employee health and safety and teamwork affect employee commitment, to determine the effect of health and safety on employee productivity, to establish ways of implementing employee health and safety policies in university of Benin, to put in place a system of getting the employers to comply with the employee health and safety policies. The research employed simple random techniques, and a sample size of 290 was used. The findings revealed amongst others that, Management of University of Benin are committed to employee’s health and safety, and how teamwork affect the commitment of employee towards their work, Health and safety of employees ‘improves productivity, Employees’ health and safety can be implemented in the organization by giving employees up to date EHS act and its regulation, assessed task that may include any hazardous manual handling activities, and provision of system for reporting and recording incidence and near misses, and The best alternative means of getting the employers and employees to comply with the policies of employee health and safety, is to organize training, discuss safety issues in meetings, and investigate incidents of accidents. The research therefore recommended that, the Management of University of Benin should keep up their commitment to employee’s `health and safety, Employee health and safety and teamwork should be taken very seriously as it affects productivity, The management of the University of Benin should ensure regular provision of PPE and The management should ensure that the employees strictly adhere to the safety rules and regulations.
