ABSTRACT
This study looked at how University of Benin (UNIBEN) students choose to consume news. Examining how often UNIBEN undergraduate students consume news is one of the specific goals. Next, we'll look at the main categories of news that UNIBEN undergraduate students love to read and why they do so. Thirdly, to investigate how UNIBEN undergrads access news for consumption. Fourthly, to investigate the variables affecting UNIBEN undergraduate students' use of the internet for news consumption. Lastly, to draw attention to the difficulties UNIBEN undergraduate students encounter when using the internet to consume news.The technique took into account the descriptive research design. The quantitative research approach was also taken into consideration, so a questionnaire was employed to gather information from the human participants. Additionally, a sample size of 100 full-time undergraduates from the departments of mass communication, theatre art, and mass communication, theatrical art, and early childhood education was taken into consideration. The samples were chosen using a deliberate sampling strategy. The data analysis was completed by using a descriptive analysis. According to the study, most UNIBEN students only occasionally consume news, but others do so occasionally. The study also discovered that the average news consumption time for respondents was less than 30 minutes. The study also discovered that sport news, entertainment news, and political or government news are the three most popular categories of news among UNIBEN students. A small percentage of students read news about business, fashion, the economy, science, technology, the environment, and the weather. According to the study, the majority of students concur that consuming news on websites like social media, digital newspapers, and other websites presents obstacles because of the prevalence of fake news and unreliable news sources. According to the report, undergraduate students should use internet news sources more for education than for amusement.
