ABSTRACT
The study focuses on determining appropriate locations for the disposal of solid waste. Geoinformatics and surveying methods were used in the investigation. Today's world has an environmental problem with waste because of the expanding human population and its activities, as well as urbanization and industrialisation. The aim is to locate suitable sites for solid waste disposal within the University of Benin, as well as evaluate the suitability of current dumpsites. The use of GIS for choosing an appropriate site for waste disposal is based on the overlaying of datasets and finding locations that meet specific suitability requirements. Consequently, the methodology utilized the spatial tools that GIS offered. For the spatial analysis, the main sub-criteria that were considered were drainage, land use, road networks, etc. As a result, the methodology's precise operations were approached in the order described below: investigation on the removal of solid waste at The University of Benin, Data collection, data processing, and conversion of the criteria into the GIS layer. All the positions and locations information needed to complete the investigation, including the solid waste spots, were acquired using a Global Positioning System receiver. A computer system was used to process the data that was obtained from GPS and other sources. The spatial relationship principles of connectivity, contiguity, and overlay techniques are effectively applied by QGIS software. The study's findings suggested viable locations for the disposal of solid wastes.
