ABSTRACT
This research examines the importance of personal names and its linguistic interpretation in Etsako-a member of the EDOID group of languages. Names are lexical items by which people are identified. The lexical items are either words, phrases or sentences. They convey meaning and reflect the knowledge of the real world. The work is aimed at examining the semantic implication of names given to new born and young infants; to account for the events surrounding the birth of a child and to highlight the importance of personal names to the Etsako people. The researcher hopes to find out how names are given to children and young infants. The discourse mode of data collection was employed. The data was collected from competent native speaker of Etsako, using digital voice recorder and a smart phone. Furthermore, the principle of relativity theory (Sapir-Wolf Hypothesis) was employed as the theoretical framework. The researcher discovered nine (9) different ways of name derivation. Finally, due to its importance and sacredness, the researcher asserts that birth-naming is an integral part of the African Traditional Religion and should be upheld not only by speakers in Etsako but in Africa at large.
