ABSTRACT
The study focuses on the application of media ethics in news gathering and dissemination among media practitioners using NUJ, Benin as a case study. The importance of the mass media cannot be overemphasized in this present world of information overload, where people are exposed to different information that they can possess. Journalists are important part of the mass media. Through the Journalism Code of ethics, they carry out important functions of the mass media which are to gather information, put it in the right perspective and disseminate it to the general public. Adopting a combination of literature review and survey methods, the study observed that media ethics is usually applied in news gathering and dissemination though Journalists in Nigeria are faced with numerous challenges, as with other professionals in different fields of endeavor. Some of the challenges include but not limited to poor remuneration, media ownership and control, insecurity, inaccessibility of valuable documents and information, hostile environment, amongst others, which in one way or the other has implication on the Journalism profession. As a result of such discovery, recommendations have been made for reviewing the welfare of Journalists.
