APPLICATION OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY AND JOB PERFORMANCE OF LIBRARIANS IN JOHN HARRIS LIBRARY, UNIVERSITY OF BENIN

ABSTRACT

This study was to investigate the application of information and communication technology and job performance of librarians. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire, which was developed and administered to 20 librarians from the John Harris library in the University of Benin in Ovia North East local government area of Edo state. The data from their responses were analyzed with the use of simple percentage. The result revealed that the majority of the staff reported feeling comfortable using computers and software, and most were able to perform basic tasks such as word processing, creating presentations, and using the internet, the library has implemented a number of ICT applications, such as an online library catalog, e-book lending, and an electronic reference service. The library has also invested in ICT infrastructure, such as computers, printers, and software. Furthermore, ICT solutions have had a positive impact on the job performance of librarians at John Harris Library, it has also identified several challenges which are lack of financial resources, lack of technical support, which can make it difficult to troubleshoot problems or upgrade software. It is therefore recommended that library administration should prioritize ongoing ICT training and professional development programs for librarians. This training should cover both the use of existing ICT tools and emerging technologies relevant to library services, the university should allocate resources for the regular maintenance and upgrading of ICT infrastructure in the library. This includes ensuring that hardware, software, and network systems are up-to-date and well-maintained.
