ABSTRACT
There is increasing demand for spatially precise information among stakeholders across local, national and global levels as well as public and private domains for efficient election management. The aim of this study was to apply GIS in election management in Egor local government area (LGA). Specific objectives were to explore the application of GIS and remote sensing in identification and mapping polling units and electoral wards in Egor LGA, map the population and density of registered voters and compute and map the extent of accessible of each electoral ward in terms of road density for efficient electoral process. Global Positioning Systems (GPS) receiver was used to obtain spatial coordinates of polling units while GIS was used in data analyses and presentations.
A total of 170 polling units in Egor LGA were identified and mapped accordingly. Two GIS databases also were created namely polling units and electoral wards. Four spatial cartographic models (maps) were also produced namely ward electoral map of Egor LGA, spatial distribution of registered voters in Egor LGA, spatial pattern (distribution) of density registered voters and electoral ward road density/accessibility index in Egor LGA. It was also revealed that Ugbowo Ward has the highest number of registered voters and classified ‘very high’ while Egor Ward is the lowest and classified ‘very low’. Uselu Ward II has the highest voters’ density and classified ‘very high’ while Evbuotubu Ward is the lowest and classified ‘very low’. In terms of accessibility Uselu Ward I and II have the higest level of accessibility and classified ‘very high’ while Evbuotubi and Oliha Ward have the lowest level of accessibility and classifies ‘very low’. The study recommended that geospatial technologies which include remote sensing, GIS and GPS should be deployed electoral management as it is capable of supporting policies and in making informed decision.
