ABSTRACT

The acute shortage and scarcity of lands for suitable waste disposal is rapidly becoming a critical growing potential problem in most urban cities in developing countries of the world. One of the major issues in environmental management via control of solid waste, pollution and health risks which happens as a result of open dumping sites is known as solid waste management (SWM). In this study, Geospatial Information System (GIS) is used in Solid Waste Management and landfill in various ways The landfill site selection criteria that are considered includes proximity to major road, water body, and buildings including the land use capacity and slope. GIS is used to digitize spatial features related to unsuitable landfill site. The most suitable areas for landfill establishment within the university campus are identified within the VC Lounge. These locations, while part of the campus, are designated for specific purposes with fewer infrastructure constraints, making them suitable for such developments. Among the suitable areas identified, the area beside the VC Lounge emerges as the most suitable location for landfill establishment within the university campus. This area, reserved for the Vice-Chancellor, offers optimal conditions for landfill development, with minimal interference with academic activities and infrastructure. it has an area of 1898.403749 and a total length of 184.139588, thereby making it the most suited of all proposed landfill sites.
