ABSTRACT
This project examined the application of Geographic Information System (GIS) in pavement maintenance management. It addresses the problem of flexible pavement deterioration by utilizing the GIS-based application. For the purpose of this work, Adolor Road, Benin city, Edo state was taken as a case study being one of the most deteriorated roads in the state. Acquisition of geospatial data was achieved using a hand-held Garmin Map 78 GPS receiver. Pavement defects dimensions and other relevant attribute data were also acquired using a walking meter and a measuring tape. This attribute data was utilized in calculating the Pavement Condition Rating (PCR) of the road via the deduct value method. The geospatial data collected was superimposed into a geo-referenced satellite imagery of the study area and integrated into ESRI ArcMap GIS software to obtain a GIS map of the study area. A query was carried out using GIS in order to obtain relevant information to aid decisionmaking. This study has been able to generate the geospatial coordinates of the road defects. Also, the study has generated a database containing the spatial and attribute data of the road. This study also determined the Pavement Condition Rating (PCR) of the study area to be 40.50%. It also determined the dominant defect on the study area to be potholes with an occurrence frequency of 60% as well as the prevalent challenges causing the defect which include moisture infiltration and heavy traffic loads. Additionally, the research has identified the most critical section of the road to be Section 3 with total defect area of 1325.54m2 . Beyond this, the study has calculated the budgetary requirements for maintenance on each road section, with Section 2 having the least cost This financial insight plays a pivotal role in facilitating well-informed decision-making processes.
