ABSTRACT

Research has shown that various plants with differing potencies, when combined, may theoretically yield better results than when used singly as an aphrodisiac. This study aims to investigate the aphrodisiac potential of polyherbal formulations prepared from Citrus limon, Moringa oleifera, Allium sativum, Zingiber officinale, and Curcuma longa. In this investigation, 20 male rats were divided into 5 groups of 4 rats in each group. Group 1 received distilled water; groups 2 and 3 received 5 and 10 mg/kg of an aqueous extract of tea respectively; group 4 received 5 mg/kg of Sildenafil citrate; and group 5 received 20 mg/kg of carbamazepine orally for 14 days. The male rats were estimated for mating and orientational behaviour as well as testosterone analysis. The polyherbal formulated tea and sildenafil 5 mg/kg increased mounting frequency when compared to carbamazepine and water control (**p<0.01; *p< 0.05). The formulated tea has no effect on intromission frequency, ejaculatory frequency and ejaculatory latency. The tea increased  anogenital sniffing, licking, and grooming when compared to water control (**p<0.01; *p< 0.05). Aqueous extract of the polyherbal tea increase testosterone levels when compared to Water control and carbamazepine (**p<0.01; *p< 0.05). The current study offers unique proof that the tea made withCitrus limon, Curcuma longa, Zingiber officinale, Allium sativum, and Moringa oleifera is a potent sexual behavior stimulant especially when it comes to sexual desire.
