ABSTRACT

Aphrodisiac is a type of food or drink which can be used to treat sexual dysfunction or having sexual activity enhancing power. Herbal plants produce a diverse range of bioactive molecules, making them a rich source of different types of medicines. In this study, ethanol and hydro ethanol were used in the extraction of A.melegueta, J.gossypifolia and G.kola. Ethanol extract of seed, A.melegueta, G.kola. seeds, and hydro ethanol extract of J.gossypifolia stem bark were used to determine the antioxidant properties of the plants as well as to determine which plant has the highest savaging activity. Results show that the ethanol extract of A. melegueta,  contain the highest savaging potential (90.24 + 0.788) at 100ug/ml, with IC50 18.14 ug/ml, followed by G. kola (87.36 +0.901) at 100ug/ml with IC50 25.33ug/ml and the plant with the least savaging activity is J. gossypifolia (2.95 + 1.270) at 100ug/ml with IC50 95.47ug/ml. The phytochemical screening of the three plant extract results revealed the presence of flavonoids, glycoside, reducing sugar in all plants with the absence of hydrosable tannin and starch. Lipid peroxidation shows that A.melegueta has the highest potent inhibitory effect as this can help prevent loss of sperm and cell death, while J. gossypifolia showed the least inhibitory effect.
