ABSTRACT

Andrographis paniculata is one of those plants that are known to have medicinal property and has been used to treat certain types of diseases in the southern and western parts of Nigeria and some parts of the world. The presence of antioxidants in the plant, Andrographis paniculata has been of great importance due to the fact that it helps to prevent oxidative damage and also combat free radicals. The antioxidant activities of the plant can be determined using various assays such as Diphenyl2-Pieryl-hydrazyl (DPPH), Reducing power, Nitric oxide and Hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay. The various assays help to determine the presence of antioxidants and the percentage scavenging activities present in the plant extracts. The antioxidant test results were later expressed as Mean ± S.D (n=3) showing significant difference with a P value (p < 0.05) in which the comparism were carried out between the aqueous extract, ethanol extract and the ascorbic acid. Moreover, it was concluded that both of the plant extracts consists of antioxidant properties but at different levels of concentration. Therefore, the Andrographis paniculata plant has been of great help in the treatment of various ailments due to its antioxidant activities.
