Abelmoschus esculentus also known as okra is a common vegetable of Sub-Sahara Africa, this study investigated the antimicrobial profile on clinical nasal isolate and antioxidant properties of ethyl acetate and aqueous extract of A. esculentus. The Gas chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) method was used to characterized of the active ingredients present in A. esculentus extracts. The ethyl acetate extract had the highest coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.96) followed by the aqueous extract R2 = 0.90. The ethyl acetate extract of A. esculentus revealed several compounds that have biological activities, among these, compounds like benzaldehyde, benzoic acid derivatives β- sitosterol and stigmasterol. The aqueous extract revealed the presence of benzoic acid and benzaldehyde. The antimicrobial properties was tested on clinical nasal isolate using broth dilution method. The antimicrobial effects of A. esculentus extract was evident at higher concentrations, effectively suppressing the growth of some nasal isolates. The antioxidant properties of the A. esculentus was tested using 2,2-phenyl-1-picrylhydrazl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay method. The presence of benzaldehyde and benzoic acid derivatives in both extract support their shared antioxidant properties. However, certain species, such as Neisseria sp. and Streptococci sp., exhibited continued growth, implying that the extract may not be equally effective against these two isolates. To assess the safety and effectiveness of A. esculentus extracts in treating nasal infections, more study should concentrate on separating the active ingredients and carrying out preclinical and clinical trials.
