ABSTRACT
The purpose of this investigation was to ascertain the antibacterial and antifungal properties of the aqueous extract derived from Gongronema latifolium (Utazi) by testing its efficacy against various clinical bacterial and fungal strains, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella, Staphylococcus, Escherichia coli, and Trichoderma. The aqueous extraction process was employed in order to isolate the active ingredient from the leaves of G. latifolium. The antibacterial properties of G. latifolium were assessed on bacterial isolates through the agar well diffusion method, while the extract's antifungal activity was tested on Trichoderma sp. The food poison technique was employed for this purpose. The results revealed that the aqueous solution of G. latifolium at concentrations of 100%, 80%, and 60% exhibited inhibitory properties on the in vitro proliferation of Pseudomonas, Klebsiella, and Staphylococcus spp. and the bacterium Escherichia coli. The impact of G. latifolium extract was most profound on Klebsiella sp., with the largest inhibitory zone recorded at 100% concentration measuring 30mm, followed by 23.5mm at 80% concentration, and 34.5mm at 60% concentration.
