ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF BORIC ACID ON SELECTED MICROORGANISMS (Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans) ASSOCIATED WITH THE VAGINA

ABSTRACT

The vaginal microbiota lives in a mutualistic relationship with the host, providing protection from pathogenic bacteria in exchange for nutrients and shelter. The protective microflora can easily be disrupted, resulting in vaginal dysbiosis and predisposing women to a variety of adverse vaginal health conditions such as bacterial vaginosis (BV), candidiasis (thrush), and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This study was aimed at evaluating the antimicrobial effect of boric acid on selected microorganisms (Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans) associated with the vagina. The antimicrobial activity of boric acid was determined by disc diffusion method using the Kirby-Bauer technique. The results revealed that Candida albicans was susceptible to boric acid with zones of inhibition which ranged from 4.00mm to 8.33mm. The results also revealed that boric acid was inactive against Staphylococcus aureus at all concentration. That is Staphylococcus aureus was 100% resistant to boric acid. The susceptibility of Candida albicans to boric acid suggests that boric acid provides a basis for developing new antifungal drugs and a natural component beneficial against fungal disease. Further studies could be carried out to determine its synergistic effect with other organic acids and antibiotics against other organisms not tested in this study.
