ANTIFUNGAL ACTIVITY OF MELON SEED (Cucumeropsis manni) OIL ON CLINICAL ISOLATES OBTAINED FROM WOUND INFECTION

ABSTRACT

Melon seed was extracted for it's oil using water and ethanol. The quality of the phytochemical present in the oil were determined using standards method. The Antibacterial activity of the melon oil extract against clinical clinical isolates from wounds was determined the agar well diffusion techniques. The antibodies susceptibility profile off the isolates, A.Fumigatus, Mucus sp, A.niger, A.Flavus, Penicillium sp, was determined using the disc diffussion essay. The phytochemicals screening of the extract revealed the presence of alkanoids, saponins, flavonoids, tanins and the absence of terpenoid zone of inhibition against Aspergillus niger 14mm and Penicillium sp 17mm, However no zones of inhibition were recorded against Aspergillus fumigatus, Mucus sp, A.flavus. The Antifugal profilling showed that A.fumigatus was sensitive to only fluconazole and voriconazole while intermediate to itraconazole and micafungin A.niger was resistant to all Antifungal drugs as well as that of mucus sp. penicillium was resistant intaconazole, micafungin , amphotericin and sensitive to voriconazole and intermediate to fluconazole. Athough C.mannii has a rich source of phytochemicals, the extract was only able to inhibit the growth of A.niger and Penicillium sp. The overall result of this study shows that C.manni has rich source of phytochemicals which serve as alternative antimicrobial agent.Therefore the oil extract could only only inhibit the growth of Aspergillus niger and penicillium sp and was not able to inhibit the growth of multi drug resistant isolate.
