ABSTRACT
Bryophyllum pinnatum (Lam) Oken is a succulent glabrous herb, which has found wide applications in traditional medicine. The plant contains secondary metabolites, which provides humans with numerous biological active products that have been used extensively as drugs, foods, and food preservative The aim of the present study was to investigate the antifungal activity of Bryophyllum pinnatum leaf extracts against phytopathogen isolated from diseased tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum). Fungal phytopathogens were isolated from diseased tomato stem. Phenotypic characterization was employed to identify the fungal isolates. Bryophyllum pinnatum leaves were used to prepare different extracts (aqueous, hydroethanolic, and ethanolic). The antifungal activities of the different concentrations (2.5, 5, and 10%) of the Bryophyllum pinnatum leaf extracts was tested against a fungal phytopathogen using the poison plate method. The results showed that the fungal phytopathogens isolated included Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus and Rhizopus species. The aqueous extract was the most effective, while the ethanol extract showed the least antifungal activity. The findings of the research reveal that aqueous leaf extract of Bryophyllum pinnatum is more effective and can be potentially used to produce antifungal agents
