ANTIBIOTIC SENSITIVITY PATTERN OF GRAM NEGATIVE BACTERIA

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to determine the antibiotic susceptibility of bacteria found in hospital sewage in areas surrounding the University of Benin teaching hospital from two different sample points. Standard culture method employing the use of selective differential media (MacConkey agar) was used to isolate and characterize the different isolate. The total heterotrophic count and coliform count were determined on the sample obtained. The result showed the bacteria population in hospital sewage samples were found to be for coliform 4.33×105 and 5.52×105 for heterotrophic count. The cultural, morphological and biochemical characterization of isolates showed Bacillus sp, Escherichia coli, Vibrio spand Proteus sp were found present. The isolates were tested against nine different antibiotics using the disc diffusion method. Majority of the bacterial isolates were found to be resistant to the antibiotics used especially to the carbapenems with intermediate level of resistance with clindamycin.  The presence of these microbes in the samples signified that hospital sewage is a reservoir for the antibiotic resistant microorganisms whose importance cannot be overemphasized.
