ABSTRACT

The human tear is a fluid secreted by the eyes to nourish it.it forms part of the innate immune response. The antimicrobial activity of basal human tears on clinical isolate was carried out using standard bacteriological techniques. The clinical isolates were identified using cultural. Morphological and biochemical characteristic. Fourry tear samples from apparently healthy volunteers of different age were evaluated for their antibacterial spectrum against the selected bacterial species (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faeculis, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). The tear samples were divided into 3 groups; Group A, Group B and Group C. The groups were given subjective numbers, tear sample from Group A 16-19 years). tear sample from Group B 20-23 years) and tear sample from Group C (24-27 years). Tears were collected voluntarily by means of a capillary pipette from volunteers and stored in a fridge. A disc diffusion method was used to evaluate the antibacterial potential of tear samples using a prepared McFarland solution on Mueller Hinton agar. 0.5% Chloramphenicol eye drop was used as a standard drug for control. The zone of inhibition (mm) was used to measure the antibacterial properties of the tears against the clinical isolate. All tear samples showed good antibacterial activity in the range of 6.5mm -14.0mm with the exception of Enterococcus faecalis. The tear samples from the Group A Group B and Group C showed good antibacterial potential with a zone of inhibition range of 7.0-13.0, 6.75-11.0 mm and 6.5-10.0 mm. respectively. Group A tear samples showed the maximum inhibition against the selected bacterial species amons at groups. In conclusion. Group A tear sample had high inhibition potential due to the presence of lysozyme and other bacteriolytic factors that has the ability to inhibit bacterial growth and also acts as a physiological scavenger for harmful substances.
