ABSTRACT
To investigate the antibacterial property of the polyherbal aqueous extract (Zingiber officinale, Annona muricata and Andrographis paniculata aqueous) against bacterial load in rat. The aqueous leaf extract at graded doses (25, 50 and 100 mg/kg) orally administered. Shigella dysenteriae and Esherichia coli where orally administered across the various groups. The activity of Amoxycillin (100 mg/kg) was used as a reference drugs, while distilled water was administered as negative control. Standard protocol was adhered to across the methods. The result indicated that the extract at graded doses triggered a significant reduction in the bacterial load of the rats’ stool induced with bacterial to cause diarrhoeal at dose dependent manner. Thus, a significant effect of the extract had a significant antibacterial activity with an inhibitory gastrointestinal effect in the peristalsis movement and fluid secretion in Wistar rats.
