ANTIBACTERIAL PROPERTIES OF CHLORINE AND ALCOHOL DISINFECTANTS AGAINST BACTERIAL ISOLATES

ABSTRACT

Antiseptics and disinfectants are used extensively in hospitals and other health care settings for a variety of topical and hard-surface applications. This study evaluated the antibacterial effect of some disinfectants on some selected isolates which include Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, and Staphylococcus aureus. Standard antibacterial experiment was carried out alongside with the disinfectant activity. Biochemical tests such as triple sugar iron test, indole, oxidase, citrate were also carried out to confirm the identity of isolates used. From the result, it was observed that all the microorganisms used were all susceptible to 100ug/ml of the alcohol disinfectant, and significantly became resistant to 75%, 50% and 25% of the concentration. Antibiotic resistance may be return to ability of bacterial isolates to produce enzymes such as -lactamase and Cephalosoprinase. However the antibacterial activity of chlorine as a disinfectant shows a significant different in activity as compared to that of alcohol. It is known that Gram-negative bacteria are more resistant than Gram-positive bacteria to agents such as ethyl alcohol and sodium hypochlorite. Chlorine disinfectant shows higher antibacterial activity against the tested bacteria except Pseudomonas aeruginosa, its strong inhibitory effect could be attributed to its high pH also can be attributed to the biological properties.
