ABSTRACT
The antibacterial activity of disinfectants purchased from different vendors in Benin metropolis was evlauted in this study. Two brands of notable disinfectants were purchased from accredited and random vendors. Standard bacteriological methods were used to identify pathogenic isolates obtained from University of Benin Teaching Hospital laboratory was identified using biochemical technique. Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method was used to evaluate the antibacterial sensitivity of the disnfectants against the bacterial isolates and also using standard antibiotics. The results revealed that the identified bacteria isolates were Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus. The isolates were found to be resistant to multiple antibiotics. The Antibacterial sensitivity of Dettol from accredited suppliers against bacterial isolates ranged from 14 mm to -20 mm (for Klebsiella) and 16 -30 mm (for Staphylococcus). In comparison, the activity of the same product from random vendors ranged from 1 mm – 8mm (for Klebsiella) and 2mm – 6mm (for Staphylococcus). It was generally observed that the antibacterial activity of the disinfectants from accredited vendors were higher than those from random vendors in all disinfectant-pathogen combination. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the disinfectants revaled a lower concentration for disinfectants obtained from accredited vendors relative to the ones purchased from random vendors.
