ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to determine the anti-ulcer properties of Garcinia kola and also compare with a known ulcer treatment drug, Cimetidine. Garcinia kola is a flowering plant which belongs to the family Clusiaceae. Twenty male albino rats weighing 150g – 220g were acclimatized for two weeks and randomized into five groups with Group I as the control group. Kolanone of dose 15mg, 30mg and 60mg was administered to Groups III, IV and V respectively while Group II received 100mg of cimetidine. Ulcer was induced with 1ml of absolute ethanol to Group II - IV. All doses were administered orally and per body weight. Weight of the animals were taken before and after the experiment. Blood was taken from the dorsal aorta, serum obtained for TNFα, Interleukin 1β and Myeloperoxidase assessment. The stomach was examined for lesions. The best ulcer index was 6.75 which was obtained in group III. The growth rate of the animals was 28.94%, 21.05%14.47%, 19.73% and 15.78% for groups I – V respectively. The best TNFα value was 303.25±1.48pg/ml obtained in group III. The best Interleukin 1β value was 46.77±0.33pg/ml obtained in group II. The best Myeloperoxidase value was 83.3±2.54u/mg obtained in group II. Stomach tissues were taken and stained and the histological results showed that 15mg extract had the best result in treating stomach ulcer. Garcinia kola has antiulcer properties and 15mg of kolanone was the best dose in treating ulcer.
