ABSTRACT
The aim of the study is to determine the anti-inflammatory effect of Harungana madagascariensis extract in phenylhydrazine induced anaemia in albino rats. Twenty- four albino rats were randomly distributed into six groups of four rats each. Group A (control) was given only distilled water, group B was given only 50mg/kg astyfer, a standard drug for the treatment of anaemia, 15 mg/kg, 30 mg/kg, 60mg/kg of H. madagascariensis extracts with 10mg/kg were given to group C, D, E respectively while 10mg/kg of phenylhydrazine was given to rats in group F. Blood sample (2 ml) was collected from the albino rat through the retro-orbital cavity, was centrifuged at 3000 rpm at room temperature and examined for malondialdehyde (MDA) and Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities. The MDA result showed that the mean values decreased from 4.20±0.03 31 (Umol/L) to 2.15±0.03 (Umol/L) in phenylhydrazine group (Group F) and the group with only 50mg/kg astyfer treatment (Group B) respectively. SOD mean value ranges from 283.48±5.31(U/g tissue) in 10 mg/kg phenylhydrazine only group (Group F) to 176.18±2.92 (U/g tissue) in 50 mg/kg astyfer group (Group B). In conclusion, it was observed that the standard drug (astyfer) is a good treatment for anaemia but not better than Harungana madagascariensis extract. The extract at 30mg/kg and 60mg/kg has a better effect in healing phenylhydrazine induced anaemia than the standard drug (astyfer).
