ABSTRACT
This research work was carried out to determining the anti-inflammatory effect of Parkia biglobosa extract on wound healing in albino rats. A total of 32, two month old, healthy female albino Rattus norvegicus rats with an average weight of about 188g were purchased from the breeding facility of the Department of Anatomy at the Faculty of Basic and Medical Sciences, University of Benin, Benin City. For a week, they were housed in plastic cages with wire mesh coverings and fed with rat pellets that were also purchased from the animal house of the department of anatomy at the University of Benin in Benin City. Water was available at all times. The cages' bedding was made of wheat straws. One group of animals received food and water only for 21 days while three of the four animal groups received Parkia biglobosa extract as treatment. The results obtained from this study shows that CAT value for group 1 ranged from 0.70µg/g to 3.65µg/g, group 2 ranged from 2.65µg/g to 3.60µg/g, group 3 ranged from 2.40µg/g to 2.60µg/g, while group 4 ranged from 3.40µg/g to 2.55µg/g. However the highest CAT value, 3.65µg/g was recorded in Group 1(control) on day 21and the lowest CAT value of 0.70µg/g was obtained from Group 1 (control) on day 7 of the experiment. The results also shows that IL-1 value for group 1 ranged from 27.15pg/ml to 33.75pg/ml, group 2 ranged from 6.65pg/ml to 11.00pg/ml, group 3 ranged from 5.75pg/ml to 21.20pg/ml, while group 4 ranged from 9.90pg/ml to 9.10pg/ml. The lowest of the IL-1 value, 5.75pg/ml was recorded in Group 3 on day 21 and the highest IL-1 value of 33.75pg/ml was obtained from Group 1 on day 21 of the experiment. The results obtained from this study implies that Parkia biglobosa ethanol extract can be developed into useful products that can be used in both in traditional and modern medicine health care system. However further research should be carried out to evaluate the chemical and structural medicinal phytochemicals inherent in the plant extract as this could be responsible for a significant range of anti-inflammatory activities.
