ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. This study was aimed at evaluatingthe anthropometric index and gender distribution of HLA and glycatedheamoglobin (HBA1C) in subjects with diabetes milletus in Isoko community, Delta State.Subjects were recruited from diabetic clinics in General Hospital Oleh, OwehMemorial Clinic Oleh, and Sage clinic Ozoro, Delta state.Blood sample was collected from two hundred male and female diabetic (n = 100 males and 100 females) and fifty (apparently healthy) non diabetic persons (n = 25males and 25 females) as control in Delta State. The analysis done were human leucocyte antigen test using RayBio Human CD 74 ELISA Kit, Glycatedhaemoglobinby spectrophometricmethod, fasting blood glucose using enzymatic technique (GOD/ POD) (Ramdox) and the Body mass index was done using a graduated metre rule (Stadiometer) and weighing balance. The result shows that the body mass index of subjects was normal. There were observed significantly higher (p<0.05) fasting blood glucose level in the male test group (180.41±2.00mg/dl) compared to the control group (97.08±2.00mg/dl), as well as, for the female test group (188.64±3.00mg/dl) compared to the control female group (102.62±2.00 mg/dl, there were significantly higher (p<0.05) HbA1C for the male and female test groups (11.7 % and 11.0%, respectively) compared to the control male and female test groups (7.1% and 7.0% respectively). However, the female test group HbA1C (11.0%) was lower than that of the male test group (11.7%), The male test group HLA level was highly significant (29.4ng/ml) compared to the control group (11.0 ng/ml) (p<0.001), and the female test also demonstrated similar pattern (29.1ng/ml) compared to the control group (10.3ng/ml) (p<0.001). In conclusion, the high human leucocyte antigen, seems to be a pre-disposing factor to susceptibility in diabetes mellitus among Deltans irrespective of the anthropometric index.
