ABSTRACT
This research is an attempt to contribute to the field of literary psychoanalysis by investigating the effects of belief systems on the characters in Akwaeke Emezi’s Freshwater and Chigozie Obioma’s An Orchestra of Minorities. It identifies and examines instances of animism, polytheism and duality in the novels to note the effects of these belief systems on the personality and identity of the characters in the novel. This is to better understand the influence of culture and religion on the behavior of individuals within a society. The literary theory employed is Sigmund Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis which attempts to explain why individuals act in certain ways. Freud’s psychoanalytic theory on religion gives insights on human motivation, answering questions regarding the origins and purposes of religious behavior.
