ABSTRACT
This project work is on personal names in the Yoruba Language. The term Yoruba refers to the language and the speakers of the language. It is spoken mainly at the Western part of Nigeria. The aim of this work is to actually describe the structure of personal names in Yoruba as well as the nature of the names. Data for this study was collected from native speakers of the language with the aid of a digital tape recorder. This study employed the descriptive linguistic approach in analyzing the data for this study. The findings in our study include the fact that names are given to children among the Yoruba people based mainly on the circumstances surrounding their birth as well as the value imposed on the children by the kinds of names they give to them.
