Abstract

Antioxidant enzyme activity serves as biomarkers for stressors in the regions of interest, by measuring antioxidant activity one can tell if the specified area is safe for the aquatic life there or if it poses a threat to the aquatic life there. When the activities of antioxidant enzymes are high, it indicates the presence of high amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Unusually high amount of ROS is a consequence of external stressors like heavy metals, UV radiation, and other chemical pollutants.  Antioxidant enzymes help neutralize the ROS produced. Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) is associated with the present of superoxide ion (O2-), Catalase indicate the presence of Hydrogen peroxide a non radical ROS, while Glutathione Peroxidase (GPx) indicates presence of lipid hydroperoxide and also Hydrogen peroxides. SOD, GPx and Catalase activities were significantly increased (p<0.05) in the two sites of interest when compared with the control site. Abattoir showed the highest activity overall which is expected due to higher industrial and domestic activities in the area.
