ABSTRACT
The study examined oxidative stress biomarkers in the liver and kidney of mudfish as well as metals at two separate Ikpoba River sites. Every week for a total of twelve weeks, fifty- two fish were gathered from the three distinct sites, and known weights of the liver and kidney were recovered for enzyme testing. When compared to control, the study found lower levels of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and super oxide dismutase in the tissues and organs of various species of site-exposed fish. When compared to fish from the Guinness site, fish from the abattoir site had the highest concentration of stress enzymes. The study demonstrates an accelerated deterioration of the Ikpoba river and hypothesizes that fish oxidative stress brought by elevated elevated metal content resulted in altered antioxidant enzyme activity.
