ABSTRACT
This study aims to assess the availability, adequacy, and accessibility of instructional materials for teaching Economics in public senior secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The research focuses on identifying the types of materials used, evaluating their sufficiency, examining the challenges teachers face in accessing these resources, and proposing solutions to improve access. Data collection was carried out using a structured questionnaire, and the direct retrieval method ensured timely collection with the help of a trained assistant. Data analysis was performed using simple percentages and frequencies to interpret the responses. Findings indicate that a variety of instructional materials, including textbooks, workbooks, audio-visual aids, and digital technologies, are extensively used in the study area. These materials are essential in enhancing the teaching and learning process, supporting comprehension, retention, and application of knowledge across diverse learning styles. However, challenges such as lack of teacher training, outdated resources, insufficient quantities, and limited access to technology were identified as significant obstacles in effectively utilizing these materials. To address these issues, the study suggests providing training for teachers on using specific materials, ensuring up-to-date technology and internet access, creating online repositories of resources, and increasing funding for educational materials. These measures are crucial for improving the overall quality of Economics education in the region, aligning with recommendations from previous studies and global educational standards.
