ABSTRACT
Since the end of the civil war, there has been an up-surge in crime in Nigeria Crimes like murder, manslaughter, suicide, assault, child stealing, slave dealing, kidnapping, rape and indecent assault have been on the increase which have been on the increase also. Others are armed robbery, stealing, burglary, house breaking, and forgery, receiving stolen property, arson and forgery of currency note. (i) Chapter one deals with introduction, statement of the problem, objectives of the study and scope of the study. Chapter two deals with literature review and theoretical framework in areas relevant to crimes. Chapter three deals with the research methodology and covers designed and the questionnaire and secondary data Chapter four deals with presentation analysis of data while chapter five deals with summary, conclusion and recommendation. (ii) The findings are in line with the hypotheses show that (i) crime has been on the increase in various areas murder (77) in 2002 (84 cases) in 2003, (107 cases) etc. (iii) Further statistics both from secondary data and primary data show that police force was using obsolete arms, insufficient ammunition poor logistics and observe communication gadgets, whereas, criminals were sophisticated weapons and advanced communication gadgets. (iv) The general performance of police is also worsened as a result of poor management of human and material resources. Table 8 of the questionnaire survey, confirm that the hypotheses is poor management part responsible for police poor performance. (v) Community support and funding found to be inadequate while crimes were found to be marginally controlled better under military regime. Based on the findings summarized above, the researcher recommends that adequate fund should be seriously looked into by the government, police should be provided with medium sophisticated weapons, communication gadgets and modern functional patrol vans and other logistics
