ABSTRACT

This project focuses on the analysis of a landfill site suitability mapping for the case study of Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. The purpose of this study is to find suitable sites for landfill in Egor L.G.A. The process entails creating a number of map layers with data on surface water proximity, land use and land cover, soil types, proximity to transit routes, proximity to built-up area, slope, and elevation. Multi-criteria decision analysis was used in connection with analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and geographic information system (GIS) to minimize competing interests and choose befitting landfill locations. The result shows that a total of 1.6% of the study area is classified as highly suitable and satisfying, with the eastern and western part of Evbuotubo town in Egor L.G.A consisting of these areas: location 1 is at Evbuotubo town close to Grace Street behind Dominion Wind and Fire ministries with Ekenwan road as its major road while the second location is around Arousa primary school by Evbotubo road. 24.9% (2289 ha) is unsuitable, 10% (916.8 ha) is suitable, 33.9% (3120 ha) is moderately suitable, and 29.6% (2722.5ha) is less suitable. The result of assumption of 0.2kg/capital/day waste generation by an individual in Egor L.G.A and indicates the total waste generated for the year 2022 to be 3669.71 tons. Based on the findings of this project it is concluded that GIS can be a very useful tool in determining landfill site location for Egor L.G.A. Therefore, the project recommends that the decision makers and stakeholders should consider using the evidence from this work as a guide for proper selection of landfill location especially among the suggested locations.
