AN INVESTIGATIVE STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF TREATMENT OF ASPIRIN -INDUCED GASTRIC ULCERATION WITH MUSA PARADISIACA ON HEMATOLOGICAL INDICES IN RATS

ABSTRACT

The common gastrointestinal condition of ulcers, especially gastric and duodenal ulcers, necessitates appropriate treatment options. In this work, we looked into how Musa paradisiaca extract affected the hematological parameters in rats with aspirin-induced stomach ulcers. Aspirin was given orally to rats to cause ulceration, and they were then given various doses of ethanol plantain extract 200mg/kg, 400mg/kg, and 800mg/kg body weight of rats for 5 days as treatment. The hematological parameters of blood samples taken at the conclusion of the therapy period were assessed. Results showed that ulceration in wistar rat significantly increased the level of white blood cell and monocyte count as a result of the triggered immunological response. There was no significant change in lymphocytes, neutrophil, eosinophil, basophil, red blood cell, hemoglobin and hematocrit in all of the test groups when compared with the control. Also there was no significant change in platelets in all test group when compared with the control. The mean ulcer index of the untreated group was significantly different from the group that recieved ethanol plantain extract and that of the standard drug. The group that recieved ethanol plantain extract had the highest percentage of ulcer inhibition, this shows that ethanol plantain extract is more effective in protecting against aspirin-induced gastric ulcer. This protective property is more efficient at a particular dosage (amount) that is it reveals a dosedependent variation in ulcer inhibition.
