ABSTRACT

This research investigates the morpho-pragmatics of ideophones in Igbo language. The main objective of the study was to investigate the ways in which ideophones are formed and used in the Igbo language. The research involved collecting data from competent native speakers of the language, as well as extracting data from written materials. The study adopted the speech act theory framework to analyze the data. The findings revealed that the morphological structure and process used to create ideophones in Igbo language is reduplication, Ideophones  contributes significantly to the overall meaning and coherence of utterances such as in mockery or advice in Igbo speech communities, enhancing the vivid imagery and expressive communication in the language. The results revealed also that ideophones belong to different lexical classes such as noun, verb and adjective depending on what they depict or how they functioned in a discourse.
