ABSTRACT
The study examined the factors influencing students’ choice of religious studies as a career in tertiary institutions with specific reference to the University of Benin.
The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was made up of 316 students (religious studies) drawn from the Department of Religions and Department of Educational Foundations. The sample of the study consisted of 158 students selected from both departments. The instruments used in generating data for the study was a closed-ended questionnaire drafted by the researcher herself. The data generated for the study were analysed with the use of tables and single percentage.
From the analysis, it was discovered that personal interest of students, parents’ socio-economic status, societal perception of students studying religions and peer group influence students’ choice of Religious Studies as a career in tertiary institution. Based on the above findings recommendations were made.
