ABSTRACT
This project is a study of the Igede Language spoken by the Igede people in Benue State, Nigeria. This study aims at discovering the speech sounds and suprasegmentals used in the language. The general aim is to identify the speech sounds of the language as well as a description of these speech sounds. Data was gathered through an oral interview of (3) native speakers of the language. Instrument for data collection was the Ibadan basic word list of 400 basic lexical items of which 399 words were found in Igede. The findings of this project shed light on the phonetic aspects of Igede, where it was discovered according to research that Igede has 34 consonants and 9 vowels and 5 nasal vowels, contributing to the understanding of this linguistic phenomenon in the language. The results can also have implications for language documentation, preservation, and teaching of Igede.
