AN EXAMINATION OF THE NATURE OF CONFLICTS

ABSTRACT

Art is not just a cluster of beautiful colours or thoughts woven and birthed to capture a particular time, moment and experiences. Art is also the portrayal of reality even as the world moves away completely from fiction. Art humanizes man; man becomes human only by art. It is therefore pertinent to give credence to works of art since it is a part of human’s metamorphosis. However, it is important to note that art does not exist in a vacuum; it is a creation sprung from an imagination that is pricked either by happenings around or perception of things to come. Literature as one of the forms of art is a method of expression. It does exist in a vacuum; rather it is a visionary reconstruction of the society. Bertolt Brecht says literature is not just the mirror held towards reality; it is also the hammar with which it is sharpened. That is, literature does not just perform a reflective function, it also performs a corrective function too by laying bare the ills, follies and terrible issues in a particularly society and procuring solutions which may not necessarily be spelt out in the narrative but are inherent within the readers. Fine Art writers have also evolved overtime to recount experiences that flood and pervade our contemporary societies in a way or the other. Some of these experiences impound psychological breakdown and sagging while some have adverse effect on a larger group of people.
