ABSTRACT

Poverty, like an elephant is more easily recognized than defined. About 75 percent of Nigeria’s population live without the basic needs of life and they also live below the poverty line. Poverty in Nigeria has been attributed to bad governance resulting from prolonged military dictatorship and its inconsistent economic policies. Despite several poverty alleviation policies introduced by various governments, poverty is still prevalent in Nigeria. This long essay adopted the desktop research method as materials were gathered with the aid of the internet. The findings of this long essay revealed that the media has been identified as a veritable tool needed for the promotion of good governance and poverty alleviation policies. Therefore, the media are saddled with the responsibility of promoting poverty alleviation policies and winning the acceptance of the citizenry for such policies. This long essay recommends that the media should live up to their responsibilities of propagation, and supporting of the cause of poverty eradication programmes in Nigeria.
