Abstract

Language is principally a tool of communication; this tool can be manifested in different ways. The fact songs can be used as a medium of communication in a society is one of the proof of how language can be diverse. Folksongs have it origin deeply root in the African tradition, the Edo Language not an exception to this.

This study hence is the data for the study are collected through oral interview and participate observation, this data serve as the primary data, other includes secondary data from articles and books.

The ethnography of Communication theory is used in the analysis of data collected by employing the speaking model. After successful analysis, the study proves that the speaking model is effective for the analysis of folksongs in Edo language by bringing out each of the contextual usage of each song.
