ABSTRACT
The present study carried out an error analysis study on Edo street names. The aim of the study was to identify and quantify the errors found with the specific objectives of submitting solutions for the remediation and eradication of the errors. The data were collected from streets sign posts in Egor, Oredo and Ovia North-East local government areas in Edo state. To authenticate the data street residents were asked to pronounce the street names and this was captured by the use of a tape recorder. The theoretical framework employed was the Interlanguage Theory. The data analysis revealed that Edo street names manifested five types of errors: insertion, substitution, redundancy, reduction and omission errors. The study found among other things that the sources of the errors included the influence of English and the personnel who are not Edo trained in the government agency in charge of street names. Furthermore the study recommended that for these errors to be practically reduced and eradicated, the government should employ graduates who have gone through the proper training in Edo standard orthography.
