ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of political education in socio cultural development of community in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. The population of this study consists of community dwellers between 18-64 years which is 95,828 in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State source from National Population Commission of Nigeria (2006), National Bureau of Statistics (2006). The multi-stage sampling techniques was used to select two hundred (200) respondents in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. In the first stage, simple random sampling was used to select four (4) communities in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo state. In the second stage, accidental sampling technique was used to selected fifty (50) respondents each from the selected communities in stage one. Therefore, a total of (200) two hundred respondents was used for this study. The hypothesis was analyzed using Pearson product moment coefficient at 0.5 level of significant. The researcher administers the questionnaire to fifteen participants outside the sampled population. Data collected was analyse using Pearson Product Moment Correlation to obtain a reliability co-efficient value of 0.77. Findings from the study it was also revealed that there is a moderate level of awareness of political education programme among the population in Ovia North East regarding the political education programme, it was seen that some individuals in Ovia North East may have limited knowledge or awareness of the political education programme. It was also discovered that there is significant relationship between political education programme and the socio-cultural development of Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. From the study it was recommended that the community should be enlightened on the importance of political education and importance of participate in politics. The study will enlighten political educators on the important role of political education on the communities.
